Roles under Settings → Roles describe employee job families and career ladders (e.g., software engineer, engineering leadership). They drive which competencies, onboarding plans, and reviews apply to each person—not to be confused with system admin permissions.
What these roles do
- Each role determines the default competencies, goal templates, and development nudges available when someone is hired or promoted.
- Assigning a role populates fields in performance reviews, one-on-ones, and mentorship planning so the right behaviors and expectations are surfaced.
- Roles can include multiple levels (individual contributor, lead, director) so maturity or seniority is reflected in every workflow.
Manage & customize roles
- Use the Admin → Roles dashboard to review existing job families, duplicate templates, and create custom roles tailored to your org.
- Build out descriptions, career ladder YAML snippets, and default team membership so stakeholders understand how the role fits into your structure.
- Control which levels are enabled for a role so people only choose valid combinations when updating profiles or hiring employees.
Lifecycle & adoption
- Assign roles as part of onboarding (via the invite flow) or update a person’s profile when they change positions.
- Audit active roles before archiving to ensure no employees remain tied to a custom definition.
- Pair role management with your HR reviews to keep competencies aligned with promotions, pay bands, and career development discussions.
